Physical education classes at the Payne Whitney Gym

13 January, 2010

During the regular school year (fall and spring semesters), the Payne Whitney Gym offers physical education classes at additional cost, from about $55-$95 for the full semester. Drop in rates are $10 a class, and you can “shop” (try out) a class the first meeting before enrolling. Summer classes are also offered but options are more limited.

Typical offerings include yoga, pilates, cardio, dance (West African, ballet, modern, tango, Middle Eastern, Latin ballroom), martial arts, squash, fencing, swimming, and SCUBA diving. Horseback riding lessons and ice skating lessons have been offered in the past at other facilities. There are also swim, dance, and yoga classes for children, with financial aid available for children’s classes.

The most current schedule is usually posted on the Payne Whitney Gym website: http://www.yalebulldogs.com/information/facilities/payne_whitney_gym/index – click on the “Classes (.pdf)” link near the top.

UPDATE (9/24): sign up for gym classes can now be done online here

Registration for a full semester’s worth of classes is typically held during the first week of classes – check the top of the class schedule for dates, times, and location for signups.

Spouses/partners of Yale students/staff may register for classes at non-member rates with Yale Affiliate ID.

The rundown on Club Sports at Yale

29 October, 2009

Club sports are an undergraduate institution at Yale. While most teams typically welcome graduate student members, there is a participation limit on the ratio of graduate students to undergraduates.

For club teams for which we could not find websites, you may have to do a little more footwork to track them down. Your best bet is to look out for an Activities Fair held at the Payne Whitney Gym near the beginning of the school year. Most club teams have tables and you can ask questions and sign up then.

The following club teams have told us specifically that grad students are welcome to join:

This is a list of all other club sports, as of Fall 2009. Please let us know if you have any information on participating or joining these teams!
